From the Friends of Shoalstone Pool –
Our fund raising dinner at the Berry Head was another great success and we raised the grand total of £500.70. The Berry Head Hotel did us proud and the meal was hot and plenty of it. They provided three big screens for the showing of the BBC film of the building of the Mayflower at Uphams Yard, so no one missed a chance to see what skills men had in the 1950’s. No hard hats in those days. A truly wonderful film to watch starting from the oak tree being cut down to the final launching of her. Proper apprenticeships were served there for young men like John Wilson, Gilbert Dalley, Edward Dalley and Francine Rogers’ brother to name just a few. Wendy and Sally the daughters of Stuart Upham who owned the yard were invited and Wendy gave a short talk after the film. Although only a handful of the 177 members bought tickets 74 people sat down for the meal so thank you to those who again supported us. We mustn’t forget Alan Griffiths “cosmo” who offered to entertain us with some magic whilst having our meal. So thank you Alan.
Another date for your diary is Sat. 3rd June when we are having a coffee morning at the Methodist Community Hall in Fore Street. If you are in town please pop in for tea or coffee. Thank you.
Happy Easter to you all.
